WASHINGTON, Wis. (WSAW) – As we learn more about cardiac arrest and the stories of Lisa Marie Presley and Damar Hamlin, one thing that is shown is that people should stay on top of their heart health because doing so gives a person the best chance of survival and recovery.
The first thing that doctors look at when a person has a heart attack is the cause of the arrest. “They will go through a series of tests to make sure their heart is working properly and they are eligible to be sent home, and they are also eligible for cardiac rehabilitation,” said Aspirus Cardiologist Dr. Daniel Krause.
If the patient is discharged, he will be entered into a cardiac rehab program that will include several activities. The medical team sets the patient up with a plan to follow.
“Every time you go, you’re monitored for blood pressure, heart rate, and what you can achieve with the goal of getting you to a certain point when you’re done with cardiac rehabilitation,” said Dr. Krause.
He said recovery takes a long time and patients are expected to improve their heart rate. Recovery can be physically and emotionally exhausting for patients.
“Eat healthy food, they must watch what they eat such as salt, saturated fat and fat, and after they have been approved by their doctor, they must resume physical activity and try to do it regularly,” he said. Dr. Krause.
Dr. Krause said anyone experiencing shortness of breath, BP, or any other heart problem should see a cardiologist immediately.
