SAN ANTONIO (January 20, 2023) – Councilwoman Ana Sandoval chaired her last meeting of the Community Health, Environment, and Culture Committee on Thursday, and gave remarks thanking the committee for her time in office.
“Thank you to the members of this committee, past and present, for their passion and interest in topics that have often not been a priority in the City’s agenda,” he said. “It has been a pleasure to shepherd health, environmental, and justice projects through this committee.”
The committee, formerly known as the Community Health & Equity Committee, was created by Mayor Ron Nirenberg at the request of Councilwoman Sandoval in 2017. It was originally responsible for overseeing “strategies, plans and programs that affect the health of residents … improving the environment, public health, education, and development of integrated services … climate planning and resilience, libraries, waste disposal and recycling, parks, and other community-related activities.”
The committee was renamed the Community Health, Environment, and Culture Committee in 2021 and its mandate expanded to include overseeing “activities related to the stewardship of the arts, culture, and history of San Antonio.”
The committee led efforts to enact the first Tobacco21 law in Texas, passed the smoke-free zone policy, reformed board and committee policies, declared Racism a Public Health Problem, and passed a resolution supporting the Right to Read.
