Health officials in Massachusetts say they have found a form of gonorrhea in two people who have tested positive for several antibiotics.
The Massachusetts Department of Health made the announcement Thursday.
Officials said that this is the first time that a case of gonorrhea that shows resistance or low resistance to antibiotics has been found in the United States.
Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that is caused by bacteria, and it can come without any symptoms. According to the health agency, it can “cause pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and other health problems” if left untreated.

“The prevalence of gonorrhea is a major public health problem that DPH, CDC, and other health departments have been alert to in the US,” said Massachusetts Public Health Commissioner Margret Cooke. “We encourage all sexually active people to get tested regularly for sexually transmitted infections and to consider reducing the number of people they have sex with and to increase the use of condoms during sex. Clinicians are advised to review the medical alert and support our surveillance efforts. .”
